IT Support

The IT Help Center provides centralized technology support (software, hardware, and account services) to the Boston University community via phone, email, and in walk-in locations.

Most requests should be submitted to IT Help ithelp@bu.edu or your IT liaisons. 

Getting Started

Office of Research New Employee Onboarding Steps

  • Assign/Purchase computer & equipment (keyboard, mouse, monitors, etc.) for new employee 
  • Contact IT to have computer imaged and discuss appropriate access levels for new employee
  • Schedule meeting with IS&T representative and new personnel to set up new computer 
    • Make sure IT connects computer to Printer, Duo, and any appropriate network drives
  • If necessary, make sure to:
    • Add new employee to shared collaboration storage spaces (such as Google Teams)
    • Assign phone to new personnel & send voicemail information
    • Request Building card swipe access 
    • Provide physical key 
  • New employee to update details in BU directory

Office of Research Employee Offboarding Steps

  • Remind employee to upload documents to network drives and shared collaboration spaces
  • Make sure employee returns all computer related equipment
  • Request IS&T reimage computer if the computer can be re-assigned to another personnel 
  • Make sure building swipe access has been removed
  • Remove personnel from shared collaboration spaces

Computer

Contact IS&T to discuss purchasing computers for your office. Computers must be configured by IS&T, make sure to contact them for setup.

Copiers

Departments should contact IS&T to review multifunctional copier options

Telephone Services

If an employee needs to be assigned a phone line or changes need to be made to an existing phone line, you can contact phone@bu.edu or visit BU TechWeb.

    Voice Mail

    The voicemail resources page has helpful tips for navigating the voicemail system. More information on how to access new features on BU Voicemail, please visit voicemail guide.

    • Manage your delivery notifications for email, phone, and text enabled devices.
    • web-based voicemail inbox allows you to listen to and manage messages, activate greetings, and reset passwords.
    • Enhanced security features require passcodes be a minimum of six digits; you will be prompted to update your PIN if you have not already done so. Forgot your password? You can now reset it through the web voicemail inbox.

    Updating Phone Line – Onboarding/Offboarding

    • To BU IT:
      • Email Phone-Telcom@bu.edu
      • Provide phone line #, new hire name, new hire email address so line can be assigned
    • To New Hire
      • Provide phone number for their records
      • Provide new voice mailbox details
        • IS&T created a new voice mailbox for you to initialize.  To set it up, please follow the instructions to “Initialize your Voice Mail” that on this website.
        • TIP: Where it says that the starter passcode/ PIN is “BOSTONU”, you will use “2678668” on your telephone’s keypad.

      • Action Items for new employee:
        • Number change on BU works:
          • To update your number so that it appears on the BU directory on outlook, go to your BU Works >> Employee Self-Services >> Personal Information >> Office Address
        • Change How Your Name Appears
      • BU Directory Changes

    Recycling

    When you can’t repair or refurbish your electronics, recycle them. Recycling electronics conserves natural resources, prevents hazardous waste from entering landfills, and results in lower carbon emissions during the manufacturing of new products.


    Communication

      1. Contact IS&T to create an email address
      2. Grant appropriate individuals access to this account

    Zoom

    Zoom provides a robust platform for online collaboration and meetings, pairing full video and audio conferencing capabilities with content sharing and cloud recording. It is especially popular for meetings with people external to the university and BU events.

    Contact IS&T if you are looking to adjust an employee or department zoom account, interested in renting an a Zoom Meeting or Webinar account, or would like guidance on upgrading your meeting space with Zoom Rooms.

    Microsoft Teams

    Microsoft Teams is a unified communications platform combining modern online meeting technology with enterprise level persistent chat, file storage and collaboration, and application integration.
