I grew up surrounded by people with preventable chronic diseases, and this is one way I know I can make a difference.
“My dad and grandma came to America from the Dominican Republic about 20 years ago. My dad went to college but didn’t finish, so when I graduated high school with honors and got into BU, he was so proud. I also received a scholarship, and it was a relief to know I wouldn’t have to worry about finances.
I loved living in the Bronx and thought I’d go to school locally. But I knew it was time to get out of my bubble and build community in a new place. At BU, if I have any questions, I know I can turn to my amazing faculty advisor or the staff in the Newbury Center, who work with first-generation students. I’ve also formed great friendships with the other musicians in the BU Marching and Pep Bands. And I recently started volunteering with the Kidney Disease Screening & Awareness Program.”
