The Writing Program normally does not permit students to over-enroll because maintaining a smaller class size is essential for seminar-style writing courses. If you have an extenuating circumstance that makes it necessary for you to take a full CAS WR class, you may submit an Over-enrollment Petition Form. Both the Writing Program and the instructor of the full WR section must approve your petition. Instructors may choose not to take any extra students. If your petition is approved, the Writing Program will register you for the full section.

Interest in a particular topic or instructor is not considered to be an extenuating circumstance. Here are a few examples of circumstances that do qualify as extenuating: you need a religious accommodation; you have medical or disability accommodation needs; you have very limited time availability to take a WR class because you are also working or are a student athlete; or you will be a senior and need to take the class in order to graduate on time. Other circumstances may also qualify.

We strongly recommend you list more than one class option and some options with different instructors if possible.

Instructors may choose not to accept extra students. We recommend providing a few backup section options in case your first choice instructor decides not to take you.
