Quick Start
Available to: Researchers, Departments, IT Professionals
Cost: The campus firewall is provided to the community free of charge. There is an initial startup cost for departmental firewalls. For new deployments, the requesting department pays for hardware (if required), licenses, and the first year’s maintenance; IS&T pays for annual maintenance thereafter.
- See Getting Started, below.
IS&T uses firewall technology to protect servers and networks from attacks originating both within and outside of our networks. Our Campus Firewall provides blanket protections for all users of our network for threats entering our network from outside. Departmental firewalls provide more granular protections for systems and applications. If your system or application contains Restricted Use data, departmental level firewall protection is required. Departmental firewalls are also recommended for servers containing Confidential data.
Benefits
A firewall protects servers and data against certain classes of network-based attacks by restricting access to specific applications, port sources, and protocols and by examining data packets traversing the network for malicious qualities. Your data, business, and research interests are better protected when a firewall is in place.
Key Features
- Both campus and departmental firewalls block connection attempts to protected systems or unauthorized ports and/or applications.
- The campus firewall monitors inbound and outbound traffic for known threats and viruses and automatically drops them at the campus borders
- The campus firewall also prevents access to known bad URLs at the campus borders
What to Expect
This service is available 24 by 7 except for standard change windows, as described in IS&T’s standard policies, procedures, and schedules for making changes
