Boston University’s MATLAB Total Academic Headcount (TAH) site license annual renewal has begun. You must update your license file(s) by July 30 in order to keep running MATLAB under BU’s MATLAB TAH license.

Current BU students, faculty, and staff are eligible to have the MATLAB Individual license on your office and personal machines. Most on-campus shared-use workstations utilizing the Campus license should be transitioned to use the Concurrent license.

  • While connected to the internet, you will need to update the license file on each device that MATLAB is installed on. This update must be completed by July 30. Update instructions follow below.
  • Once you have updated the license file(s), you will be able to continue using MATLAB on your devices for another year (or perpetually if you switch to the Concurrent license).  The Individual and Campus licenses do not require an internet connection to run MATLAB.
  • If the installation has already expired (after July 30), you will be prompted to activate the new license when attempting to launch MATLAB.

How to Update your Individual License File

  1. Open MATLAB (If your license has expired, the activation client will launch. Continue to Step 3.)
  2. Navigate to Help (in the Ribbon) > Licensing > Activate Software
  3. Select “Activate automatically using the Internet (recommended)” and click “Next
  4. Once the new license is activated, which will take a number of steps including authenticating to your BU account, you will need to restart MATLAB in order for the new license file to be recognized.

Once the activation finishes successfully, it will roll over to the new license file when the old one expires. A few people may continue to see the expiration warning in MATLAB until the old file expires.

If the installation has already expired (after July 30), you will be prompted to activate the new license when attempting to launch MATLAB.

The Campus License

Most on-campus shared-use workstations utilizing the Campus license should be transitioned to use the Concurrent license. The Concurrent license should be used on shared-use workstations which are located on-campus with continuous access to the BU network. The Campus license should be used on shared-use laptops which may be used in varying locations and off the network. Please go to the MATLAB Shared-use Workstations page (BU login required) for further instructions on transitioning to the Concurrent license and/or updating the Campus license file.

Research Collaborators

External Research Collaborators who are on SCC Research Projects may continue to use MATLAB on the SCC and any Lab machines owned by BU. You are not eligible to use BU’s MATLAB TAH Individual license on your personal devices.

Alumni

BU’s MATLAB TAH license does not cover alumni.
