Transitioning how IP addresses are assigned – Beginning Sunday 7/3

As part of our continuing effort to improve wireless service across Boston University, we will change the way Internet Protocol (IP) addresses get assigned to wireless devices on campus.

Effective Sunday, July 3, 2022, IS&T will transition the process of assigning IP addresses on Wi-Fi from public IP addresses to private IP. This process is similar to how many Wi-Fi networks are configured, whether it be your home network, or using the free wireless at a coffee shop. Making this change will improve wireless security while allowing us to continue to support the growing number of devices that are being placed on the campus Wi-Fi network.

While we do not anticipate this change will impact most individuals, users connecting to devices on the campus wireless network from off-campus using a Secure Shell client (SSH) will need to note the new IP address and first connect to the BU Virtual Private Network (VPN). You can access details on using the VPN through our TechWeb page.
