Please join us in congratulating the faculty who received an Award for Excellence in Teaching for the Spring 2015 semester. Recipients are selected by the Teaching Awards Selection Subcommittee, which is comprised of faculty from each department. The subcommittee’s selection is based on a review of the overall course evaluations, including instructor ratings and student comments.
The award winners are listed below, together with representative quotes from students about their courses. Kudos to all the winners.
Recipients of the Spring 2015 Awards
Candice Belanoff
SB820
Assessment and Planning for Health Promotion
“Candice is AMAZING. She is exactly what I appreciate in a grad school professor—pushes you, but treats you like a colleague rather than a student.”
“Her enthusiasm is contagious…. I feel ready to do a real needs assessment—that’s awesome.”
Dan Brooks
EP855
Advanced Epidemiology Seminar: Issues in Study Design
“In terms of content, this course was FANTASTIC. I feel like a whole new epidemiologist! The readings and discussion were a perfect setting to facilitate learning the material.”
Howard Cabral
BS805
Intermediate Statistical Computing
“Professor Cabral obviously cares about his students…. He really makes it a point that he is more than a professor to us. Rather, he sees himself as our colleague.”
“Prof. Cabral knows the material REALLY well that he can explain concepts thoroughly. His examples in class are interdisciplinary, which is helpful to understand how a specific lecture can apply to various topics in public health.”
Michael Grodin
PH728
Religion, Ethics, and Public Health
“Dr. Grodin is a repository of knowledge. He encourages discussion and forced us to think carefully. Made me understand that there is no such thing as a panacea when it comes to public health interventions…. The themes and subjects we learned about in this class will stick with me throughout my career and personal life.”
Gouri Gupte
PM835
Lean Management in Healthcare
“Gouri is fantastic! What an asset to the BU/BMC community!”
“Having students work on site at a hospital is invaluable. This experience taught me so much more about Lean and QI than I would have just sitting in a classroom. Absolutely my favorite experience at BUSPH.”
Erin Hasselberg
IH722
Supply Chain Management for Improved Health System Performance
“Prof. Hasselberg is an outstanding teacher. This is the only night class that I have taken that I actually wanted to stay longer! She brings an applied perspective that is often overlooked in other classes. Putting supply chain into context and providing students with simulations and online tools made this class excellent.”
Megan Healey
EP713
Introduction to Epidemiology
“Given that this is Professor Healey’s first time teaching this course, I was incredibly impressed with her preparedness, and depth of the materials she prepared for us.
“She also administered mid-semester evaluations and gave us specific feedback about how she was implementing our suggestions from these surveys, which I really appreciated. It was clear that Professor Healey spent a great deal of time preparing for this course and was very invested in our ability to learn and engage in the material.”
David Jones
PM755
Health Care Delivery Systems
“Dr. Jones is a great professor. He may be my favorite professor at BU so far. It’s hard to believe this is his first semester teaching the course because he already has such a great handle on the material and how to lead the class…The best part was that there was no ambiguity [in the course expectations] at ALL. It is the best course I have EVER taken in that regard, and I think should be the standard for all other courses..”
Wayne LaMorte
EP713
Introduction to Epidemiology
“Are you nervous about Epi? Do you not have a background in this field of study? Look no further and take Epi with Wayne LaMorte!! I was nervous, scared, uneasy, and not excited about taking Epi. However, Wayne presents this topic in a way that is easy to understand and comprehend. He caters the class towards students success and really wanted to see EVERYONE do well.”
Julia Lanham
MC795
The Health of Adolescents and Emerging Adults
“This was one of the most valuable courses I have taken at BU. It connected theory and practice and provided a safe environment for crucial discourse on a variety of public health topics.”
“Julia has been a fantastic professor. Her respect and trust of each of her students was always obvious.”
Jacqueline Milton
BS723
Introduction to Statistical Computing
“Dr. Milton is by far the best instructor I ever had. She has an amazing way of teaching and explaining the most difficult concepts in a way that you understand.”
“She made sure students really grasped the material in class and clarified any questions that arose. She really cares that you do well.”
Michael Siegel
SB721
Social and Behavioral Sciences for Public Health
“He is truly influential, compassionate, and knowledgeable of what he is teaching. He wants his students to learn, and apply what is taught, in an effective manner.”
“I liked Dr. Siegel’s use of in-class exercises and real-world public health campaigns allows for students to interact with the material. In allowing students to engage and participate in these activities, learning becomes experiential and meaningful.”
