Public Health Week Events at BUSPH.
Public Health Week, held annually the first full week in April, highlights timely topics in public health and celebrates the critically important work of public health practitioners, researchers and educators.
For more than two decades, the week of themed events has helped raise awareness on a variety of issues at the national, state and local level. From April 7-13, BUSPH has organized its own series of events tied into the national celebration that include an expansive variety of lectures, student panels, and work immersion at a public health department.
The week launches with a panel discussion exploring student perspectives on working abroad, which has traditionally been a popular career path for many public health practitioners. The panel is from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., April 7 in room Crosstown 460.
On Tuesday, BUSPH students will volunteer at the Boston Area Health Education Center (BAHEC) and Community Academy for Science and Health to help expose a new general of high school students to the rewards of studying public health.
A full slate of events on Wednesday, April 9 begins with “Real World Public Health,” which will immerse SPH students in the inner workings of the Cambridge Public Health Department. At noon, the Department of Community Health Sciences is sponsoring a public health forum with guest lecturer Dr. Josiah Rich of Brown University. Rich will be speaking about issues surrounding what he has termed three current interrelated epidemics affecting society: incarceration, HIV/AIDS and drug overdoses. The forum is from noon to 1 p.m. in L-112.
At 4 p.m. Wednesday, public health will be honored at Fenway as the Red Sox celebrate Massachusetts Public Health Association Day. Discounted tickets for the MPHA’s block of seats are sold out, but tickets may be available at the box office.
From 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, a panel of faculty from the Department of Community Health Sciences will discuss the winding and unconventional career twists on their journey into public health. The panel meets in L-112.
BUSPH student Karen Liaw will lead a cooking demonstration on Thursday from noon to 1:30 p.m. to highlight healthy foods from around the world.
Friday, April 11 the fun moves offshore for the 18th Annual BUSPH Boat Cruise, a night of dinner and dancing while touring Boston Harbor aboard the Odyssey, and Sunday, April 13, dozens of BUSPH students, staff and faculty will “Walk for Change,” an organized walk along the Charles River to support the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center.
