Susan Halabi, PhD, is the James B. Duke Distinguished Professor of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics and Chief of the Division of Biostatistics in the Department of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics at Duke University Medical Center. For over twenty-five years, she has been at the forefront of designing and analyzing clinical trials in oncology. She develops novel methods for the design and analysis of clinical studies and innovative variable selection methods for biomarkers and high-dimensional data.
Dr. Halabi is committed to ensuring statistical rigor in all her clinical studies so that they are impactful to patients and society. Her most significant contributions concern building and validating prognostic models of outcomes for prostate cancer and identifying surrogate endpoints for overall survival. She has served as the Principal Investigator (PI) on several federally funded grants and continues to lead multiple federally supported research projects.
Dr. Halabi has over 300 peer-reviewed publications and has co-edited two books that have become key works in the field: Oncology Clinical Trials (2nd Edition, Demos 2018) and Textbook of Clinical Trials in Oncology (CRC Press 2019). A past president of the Society for Clinical Trials, she has received numerous awards, including being named a Fellow of the Society for Clinical Trials, the American Statistical Association, and the American Society for Clinical Oncology.
Purpose of the Award
This annual award recognizes a biostatistician whose academic achievements reflect the contributions to teaching, research, and service exemplified by Professor L. Adrienne Cupples. Dr. Cupples joined the faculty at the Boston University School of Public Health (BUSPH) in 1981 and later served as founding Chair of the Department of Biostatistics and Co-Executive Director of the Graduate Program in Biostatistics. During her tenure at BUSPH, she advanced the field of biostatistics through extensive publications in major journals and book chapters on collaborative and methodological research, development and effective teaching of a wide range of biostatistics courses, and mentorship of numerous graduate students and faculty.
