Methods and concepts of epidemiology can usefully be adapted to explaining the politics of making and implementing health policy. Dan Fox will illustrate how understanding of recent events in the politics of health policy in the United States can be enhanced by applying the methodology of PICO (Patients, Interventions, Comparison Group, and Outcomes) for formulating key questions for systematic reviews and by expanding the conventional typology of systematic bias. He will recommend that epidemiology join the disciplines of the policy sciences.
