Snorkeling Standards
Snorkeling does not require a strict training or authorization process at BU. For assistance, the Diving Control Board has provided guidance below.
BU Snorkeling Standards
Authorization for Snorkeling
Boston University recognizes that snorkeling is a valid and effective scientific diving technique. Although snorkeling is less technically complex than other diving methods there are inherent risks associated with snorkeling which must be considered including physical and physiological stress of breath-hold diving, pressure-related injuries, dangerous aquatic animals, injury or entanglement.
Getting Authorized for Snorkel
To obtain authorization for snorkeling and free diving, an applicant who is not a certified Scientific Diver or Diver in Training must meet the following requirements.
- Minimum age of 18 years old.
- Submit an application/resume to divesafe@bu.edu.
- Complete the diving medical form available in the Dive Safety forms and policies library. Applicants may be required to obtain a medical clearance if medical history indicates a possible contraindication to diving. Note: the medical short form does not fulfill AAUS requirements for scuba.
- Hold current certifications of training in CPR and First Aid (Oxygen Administration is also recommended).
- Complete the Boston University FitRec Swimming Tests
Requirements for Snorkeling
- Minimum equipment shall include mask, fins, snorkel, and a surface flotation device such as a snorkel vest, buoyancy compensator or surface float (a line cutting tool is required when a float with line is used and otherwise recommended).
- The dive team shall consist of a minimum of two qualified individuals. Typical minimum safety equipment recommended include a first aid kit, oxygen kit and a VHF radio or cell phone.
- A diver’s flag must be prominently displayed at the dive site. Divers must remain within 100 feet of the flag.
- The dive leader will provide a surface briefing that reviews the safety plan, underwater hazards and dangerous marine life and acknowledges that any individual that feels uncomfortable about the swim situation may choose not to participate without academic or other penalty.
- The dive leader will have a written swim record of buddy teams and dive plan (dive records and reports are required to be submitted to the DSO monthly).
BU Swim Test
The Boston University Boating Swim Test may be taken during open swim hours at the Competition Pool at FitRec. The test includes the following components:
- Jump or dive into the pool and swim 5 yards/3 body lengths underwater.
- Surface and continue swimming 100 yards, demonstrating rhythmic breathing (freestyle or breaststroke).
- Touch the wall, move away, and tread water for 2 continuous minutes.
- Float on your stomach without sculling or kicking for 1 minute, turning only your head to breathe.
