Associate Provost for Graduate Affairs Daniel Kleinman Announces Return to Faculty

From Dr. Gloria Waters, University Provost and Chief Academic Officer

I am writing to share the news that Dr. Daniel Lee Kleinman, associate provost for graduate affairs and professor of sociology, has announced plans to step down from his administrative role at the end of December 2024 and return to the faculty following a sabbatical.

Since joining Boston University in January 2017, Daniel has been a key member of the academic leadership in the Provost’s Office.  He has provided leadership on a wide variety of matters related to graduate education, interdisciplinary and co-curricular education and research, professional development for graduate students, and collaborations between our Charles River and Medical Campus graduate programs.

Daniel’s work to improve the student experience and create new systems for accountability, access, and inclusion includes overseeing the development of the PhD Program Profiles, as well as comprehensive professional development programming for PhD students. He developed faculty fellow positions that focus on diversifying applicant pools and building inclusive campus environments for students from underrepresented populations. He co-chaired the Task Force on Envisioning the Future of Data Science at BU, which produced the Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences; chaired the Working Group on Graduate and Professional Programs; and led our participation in important national conversations such as the AAU’s PhD Education Initiative. Daniel has brought extraordinary collegiality and a forward-looking focus to all of these endeavors.

Daniel will formally step down from his role at the end of December. Please join me in thanking him for his many contributions to Boston University graduate education and in wishing him well as he begins this next chapter. There will be an opportunity for us to celebrate Daniel more formally during the fall semester.

We will immediately begin a search for the next associate provost of graduate affairs and will consider both internal and external candidates. The associate provost provides central leadership on graduate academic efforts, working closely with the schools and colleges to promote collaboration and strengthen the graduate experience.

If you would like to nominate an individual to be considered for this position or would like to be considered yourself, please send a nomination or expression of interest via email to Sarah Flanagan, executive assistant to the provost at smflanag@bu.edu. Alternatively, please send nominations or letters of interest in writing to me at the Office of the Provost (1 Silber Way, Boston, MA 02215). Please mark the envelope ‘Confidential’ if you would like your correspondence to be held in confidence. Candidates must hold or be eligible to hold a faculty appointment at a senior level to be considered for this role. I expect to identify and name a successor before the end of the calendar year.
