

Timothy Longman
Associate Dean for Academic Affairs; Professor of International Relations and Political Science
Professor Longman’s research focuses on state-society relations in Africa, looking particularly at human rights, transitional justice, democratization, civil society, the politics of race and ethnicity, religion and politics, and women and politics. He has published two books on Rwanda, Christianity and Genocide in Rwanda (Cambridge University Press 2011) and Memory and Justice in Post-Genocide Rwanda (Cambridge University Press, 2017), which was recognized as the best book in African politics by the African Politics Conference Book. He was also a researcher and contributing author for Leave None to Tell the Story: Genocide in Rwanda, the report from Human Rights Watch and FIDH that was awarded the Raphael Lemkin Prize. He is currently working on two book projects, an analysis of church-state relations across Africa and study, being carried out with Taylor Boas, of anti-LGBTQ backlash in Africa and Latin America.
Professor Longman’s areas of expertise is focused on Africa and include human rights, politics of race and ethnicity, democratization, religion and politics, women and politics in the African context.
