Najam Discusses Rising US-Russia Tensions and Conflict Over Ukraine
Adil Najam, Dean of the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, appeared on PTV World to discuss the international implications of the escalating United States-Russia tensions and what may happen if a Russian incursion of Ukraine occurs.
In his remarks, Najam says that neither Russia nor the U.S. has made their explicit plans clear to the world and they – along with the rest of the world – are trying to gauge the appetite for reaction. While there has been lots of speculation of war, he doesn’t believe that either side desires a military conflict; however, Najam laments the rapidity and inundation of communications and news today as they encourage rapid action over sensible decisions making.
Najam goes on to say that while the U.S. and Russia are the two biggest adversaries in this situation, it should not be seen simply as a US-Russia issue. How the conflict over Ukraine plays out depends in large part on how the rest of Europe reacts to Russian encroachment, especially for countries where Russia is a direct neighbor and security threat.
