Najam Keynote Addresses Population Challenges in an Ever-Changing World

On December 7, 2021, Adil Najam, Dean of the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, delivered the keynote address at the Population Association of Pakistan‘s (PAP) 22nd annual conference, which explored development and population challenges for Pakistan.

The hybrid conference – held in collaboration with the National University of Science and Technology in Pakistan – took place remotely and in-person in Islamabad from December 7-9, 2021. Through this event, PAP provides an opportunity to bridge various social science disciplines including economics, public and social policy, statistics, demography, public health, and sociology to deliberate upon solutions for passing population and development-related issues of Pakistan in our ever-changing world.

Najam’s remarks highlighted three areas that population experts, demographers, and social scientists will have to confront: the human development impacts of climate change, the impact of COVID not just as a disease but as a driver of social change, and the continuing youth bulge in countries like Pakistan.
