GPN Committee on Diversity Equity Inclusion & Justice
Mission Statement
Systemic oppression is multifaceted and continues to challenge the integrity of diversity, equity, and inclusion in academia. The mission of the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice (DEIJ) Committee is to establish the Graduate Program for Neuroscience (GPN) as a leader in the promotion and training of future neuroscientists in an anti-racist, anti-ageist, anti-sexist, anti-ablest, anti-classist, anti-homophobic, and anti-transphobic environment. Therefore, the GPN DEIJ Committee is committed to:
- Actively supporting Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) and other underrepresented students, faculty, post-docs, and staff associated with GPN.
- Ensuring that the GPN neuroscience community at BU is representative of our diverse society;
- Providing resources through which the GPN neuroscience community at BU can be informed on how to actively work towards achieving social justice;
- Collaborating with GPN neuroscience-affiliated departments and programs at BU in the hiring and recruitment of BIPOC and other underrepresented students, faculty, post-docs, and staff; and
- Establishing a working relationship with departmental, school/college, and university-wide committees, including the Faculty Council, to advocate for university-wide DEIJ initiatives.
The GPN DEIJ Committee acknowledges and embraces the intersectionality of identities within the neuroscience community just as it recognizes and welcomes the multidisciplinary nature of neuroscience. With our strong commitment, we will work towards dismantling systemic oppression by promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion to bring about justice in neuroscience and academia at Boston University.
