With ‘Special’ Ice Cream, Gastronomy Alum Blazes Trail in Frozen Edibles
The Massachusetts cannabis industry is about to get sweeter. David Yusefzadeh (MET’18), a graduate of BU MET’s MLA in Gastronomy program, is the force behind Cloud Creamery, a newly licensed, Framingham-based business specializing in high-end, cannabis-infused, frozen delights.
When Yusefzadeh, an experienced chef, initially surveyed the budding cannabis industry, he noticed a shortcoming—most of the cannabinoid-infused edibles on the newly legal market amounted to little more than junk food.
“It’s all candy, high-fructose syrup, pork gelatin, and artificial coloring,” he recently told the Boston Globe. “I was like, ‘Where’s the food?’ There’s no story. It’s just to get you high.”
The observation fast transformed into an opportunity, as Yusefzadeh committed to crafting a product, gourmet ice cream, that would appeal to foodies who wanted to enjoy their cannabis oil-infused comestibles for more than their bodily effects.
Now, Cloud Creamery is set to distribute an assortment of debut varieties—including mango yuzu sorbet, Tanzanian vanilla, and dark chocolate truffle—to marijuana dispensaries across Massachusetts. The gastronomical entrepreneur is confident that his infusion of elegance to the edible market will be a boon to discerning aficionados.
“The whole basis of our company is to deliver a real experience and create something you actually want to eat, not just, ‘OK, I guess I have to get my 5 milligrams by choking this down,’” Yusefzadeh says. “We want to offer something much higher quality.”
