Oldest Education Journal in the Country

Founded in 1875, Boston University Wheelock College of Education & Human Development’s Journal of Education is the oldest continuously published educational journal in the United States. At the time of its founding, several journals that were published in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut were combined to create a publication entitled The New England Journal of Education.
Two additional publications were added in subsequent years: the Kindergarten Messenger in 1876 and Education Weekly of Indianapolis in 1885. In 1886, the Reverend Albert Edward Winship purchased the publication and changed the title to The Journal of Education for School People in New England and Beyond. After serving for 47 years as the editor Reverend Winship was succeeded by Anson Wood Belding. Almost two decades later, in 1951, Boston University School of Education purchased the journal.
In 2009, a milestone was reached when the Journal of Education became a refereed publication under the leadership of Professor and Editor Roselmina (Lee) Indrisano. Following Professor Indrisano’s retirement, Dr. Hardin L.K. Coleman (former Dean of the Boston University School of Education) was chosen as her editorial successor and he brought the journal to Sage Publications. Boston University School of Education merged with Wheelock College in 2018, forming the Boston University Wheelock College of Education & Human Development, the current home of the Journal of Education.
