Staff Example

Here’s an example to illustrate how these benefits work effective January 1st, 2025.

Sarah is a full time Exempt Staff Member, who has been working at BU for 10 years.

Sarah gives birth to a child, qualifying her for both personal medical leave and family leave. Sarah qualifies for 8 weeks of personal medical leave covered at 100% pay through Family and Medical Leave.

Because the maximum leave duration per a 12-month period is 26 weeks, Sarah can take a personal medical leave for childbirth for up to 14 weeks, if certified by her medical provider, then take an additional 12-weeks of bonding leave.  During the 14 weeks of personal medical leave, she receives 100% of her weekly base pay through Family and Medical Leave.

Sarah is also eligible for parental leave to bond with her new child. Sarah uses this family leave following her personal medical leave, and receives another 12 weeks at 100% of pay.

In total, Sarah receives full pay for 26 weeks of leave through the combination of Family and Medical Leave benefits and Accrued Sick Time.
