GCI Colloquium: The AIIB – Early Development, Innovations & Future Priorities

Gregory T. Chin, Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at York University, presented as part of the GDP Center’s Global China Research Colloquium on Monday, November 4th to a crowd of BU faculty, students, and staff.

In his presentation, titled “The AIIB: Early Development, Innovations and Future Priorities,” Chin explained the reasoning for the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank’s (AIIB) rapid growth in the past 3.5 years as well as the implications for this growth on a global scale.  Chin also argued against concerns about the bank pushing forth a private agenda stating:

“[The AIIB] is not a China-only story, it is China-initated or China-backed bank with high level of engagement of more than 20 European members and (eventually) 16 African and 8 Latin American members in addition to 44 Asian full members, besides China”

He concluded the lecture by emphasizing that the rapid success of the AIIB stems from its strategic flexibility and its growing reputation of good governance and management, particularly when compared to other multilateral organizations such as the World Bank.
