Mental Health & Well-being Checkups

A Mental Health & Well-being Checkup is a private, one-on-one session with a professional counselor focused on supporting your emotional and mental wellness. Before the visit, you’ll complete a set of brief, evidence-based screening tools: the PHQ-9 (which screens for symptoms of depression), the GAD-7 (which screens for anxiety), and the AUDIT (which assesses alcohol use). These tools help highlight areas that may be affecting your mental health and overall well-being.
During your confidential meeting, your FSAO counselor will review the results with you, helping you understand what they might mean in the context of your life and current challenges. These screenings are not diagnostic, but they provide a helpful foundation for open, supportive conversation. Together, you and your counselor can explore what’s going on, discuss your concerns, and consider potential next steps—whether that’s learning new coping strategies, making small lifestyle changes, or accessing further support. The goal is to better understand your mental health and empower you to take positive steps toward greater balance and well-being.
What screening tools are used in the Mental Health & Well-being Checkup?
The Mental Health & Well-being Checkup includes a Mental Health Screening Questionnaire made up of three evidence-based tools: the PHQ-9, GAD-7, and AUDIT.
- PHQ-9 (Patient Health Questionnaire-9): A nine-item questionnaire used to screen for symptoms of depression in adults.
- GAD-7 (Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7): A seven-item questionnaire that screens for and measures the severity of symptoms of anxiety (such as feeling nervous or on edge and worrying about different things) over the past two weeks.
- AUDIT (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test): A 10-question screening tool designed to identify risky or harmful patterns of alcohol use over the past 12 months and assess the potential for alcohol-related problems.
These tools are completed before your session, and your counselor will review and discuss the results with you during your confidential checkup.
How is it different from a Counseling session?
A Mental Health & Well-being Checkup is a one-time session designed to give you a clearer understanding of your overall mental health. Before the visit, you’ll complete a brief screening questionnaire to help identify areas that may be affecting your well-being. During the session, you and the counselor will review the results, talk through any concerns, and consider next steps. This may include self-care strategies, support resources, or a referral for behavioral health treatment if indicated.
A FSAO counseling visit provides a space to discuss personal or work-related challenges in more depth. These short-term, solution-focused sessions help you explore concerns, identify options, and build coping strategies. Like the checkup, FSAO counseling can also lead to referrals for ongoing behavioral health support when appropriate.
