The Equal Opportunity Office (EOO) addresses requests from faculty, staff, and job applicants with disabilities for workplace accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and other relevant laws. Reasonable accommodations are changes made to a job or the workplace to help qualified applicants or employees with disabilities apply for jobs or perform their tasks effectively. Examples include:
- Acquiring or modifying equipment or devices
- Adjusting work schedules
- Removing physical barriers in the work area
Request
When we receive an accommodation request or referral, we will email the employee or applicant to request supporting medical documentation, depending on the nature of the request. You can find the form here: Request for Medical Information for ADA Accommodations. We recommend having the treating provider most familiar with your needs complete this form.
Engage
Once a request and supporting documentation are received, the EOO engages promptly in an interactive dialogue with the requesting individual and their direct supervisor to discuss the reasonableness of the request. All parties are expected to participate in this process in good faith. Please note: While the University considers an employee’s preference when assessing reasonable accommodation requests, we may offer an alternative accommodation if it is effective.
Other Resources
For medical leave, contact Sedgwick, the University’s third-party vendor administering leave benefits. More information is available here: How to Access Benefits. For questions about leave, contact the HR Service Center at hr@bu.edu or call 617-353-2380. Medical leave will only be reviewed as an accommodation if the requestor has used up available PFML/FMLA allotments or is not eligible.
For questions about job performance or employee benefits (e.g., sick or vacation time), please reach out to your HR Business Partner or contact the HR Service Center.
