Communications and Networking

Networks make the whole greater than the sum of its parts. Social networks, computer networks, and transportation networks are all examples deeply enmeshed into the fabric of our lives. Research in SE and the affiliated Center for Information and Systems Engineering (CISE) investigates fundamental research questions such as network formation and evolution, and interaction between network agents which may be cooperative or competitive. These questions are addressed through cutting-edge methods from optimization, control, information theory, machine learning, and game theory. Theoretical research is complemented by experimental work, which includes the testing of IoT and 5G network systems, deployment of networks of autonomous agents (e.g., ground robots, drones, and connected autonomous vehicles), design of neural networks for deep learning, federations of cloud computing systems, and data-driven methods to detect and thwart malicious behavior on the Internet.
