Students Present Dental Research at 2018 UROP Symposium
The 21st annual Undergraduate Research Symposium was held on Friday, October 19, 2018, from 11 am to 1 pm in the GSU Metcalf Ballroom. Students from across the university showcased their research from the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP), including four students who worked with mentors at the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine (GSDM).
In the 2017-2018 academic year, four undergraduate students worked with faculty mentors at GSDM. Each of them presented a poster at the UROP Symposium on their research:
- The Role of Beta-Catenin/CBP Complex in Epigenetic Changes That Promote Aggressive Traits in HNSCC and ICG-001-Mediated Inhibition of Wnt/Beta-Catenin Pathway, Gwendolyn Pyeatt, mentored by Maria Kukuruzinska, Department of Molecular & Cell Biology
- Secretion of Sclerostin Promotes Osteopenia in Bone and Beige Adipogenesis in Peripheral Fat Depots, Alejandro Kochen, mentored by Paola Divieti Pajevic, Department of Molecular & Cell Biology
- Investigating Factors Induced by Osteocytes That Promote Monocyte/Macrophage Proliferation and Inhabit Osteoclast Differentiation Through Conditioned Medium, Veronica Lu, mentored by Paola Divieti Pajevic, Department of Molecular & Cell Biology
- Impact of Docetaxel on Live Ex-Vivo Cancer-Bone Cell Interaction Model System in the Absence and Presence of Insulin and Calcitonin, Sheena Mead, mentored by Erdjan Salih, Department of Periodontology
“This past year, GSDM had four dedicated undergraduate students participate in UROP,” said Dr. Maria Kukuruzinska, Associate Dean for Research and Professor in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology. “I applaud the scientific curiosity and diligence of our UROP students, and I trust that their experience will empower them to pursue further research.”
The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program enables undergraduate students across the university to participate in faculty-mentored research.
