Through the Zero Waste Task Force, the BU community helped to co-create the future of waste management on campus. Providing consistent centralized bin setups is one of the most basic and well-researched methods for improving an individual’s proper waste-sorting habits. Recommendation 13 in the Zero Waste Plan calls to standardize and expand the collection of recycling, trash, and organics.
During the summer of 2024, you will see this new infrastructure start to be rolled out. With 1000s of bins across campus, this project is a massive undertaking that will take months to be completed. The goals of developing an integrated, standardized waste system for the University are:
- Reducing the number of times waste is handled
- Increasing efficiency
- Transitioning to single-stream recycling
- Giving the community clear and consistent communication about waste and recycling
