This project involved the replacement of the windows in the University’s most iconic buildings at the College of Arts & Sciences, School of Theology, and Metropolitan College, in phases over four to five years with minimal disruption to classes and faculty offices. The existing single-paned, steel-framed windows were original and had been in place since the late 1930s. The replacement window design was approved by the Massachusetts Historical Commission.
Sustainability
The University’s window replacement program for 685–755 Commonwealth Avenue is sensitive to the architectural style and tradition of the original windows, but is more compatible with modern technology and consistent with today’s environmental conditions and energy efficiency needs. The windows save 650,000kWh of electricity, 5,200 mmbtus of heating therms, and result in a combined campus carbon emissions reduction of 770 metric tons CO2e, the equivalent of 103 cars per year.
