Stephen Lee Cohen Award for Sublime Firsts (Students enrolled in a CAS CC course)
The Stephen Lee Cohen Award Fund for Sublime Firsts in the CAS Core is designed to support undergraduate students with financial need to help them access new experiential learning opportunities related to Core coursework. The award is intended to cover expenses such as event tickets, entrance fees, and access to additional reading material or online resources, as well as related to travel, lodging, or meal expenses. Make sure to read the guidelines below.
Stephen Lee Cohen Award Fund for Sublime Firsts Guidelines
Fund Guidelines:
- BU Students enrolled in a Core (CC) course the semester the experience take place are eligible for funding once per academic year;
- Awards range from $25-$100;
- Requests should be submitted through the online form below at least three weeks before the event will take place;
- Applications are reviewed on Mondays on a rolling basis;
- The request should articulate how this event relates to a Core class;
- Funding options once notified of approval include:
- **Please do not purchase tickets before receiving approval for the fund. We are not able to accept Venmo.
- Self-purchase with a reimbursement within 45 days as long as a receipt is provided;
- Core office can purchase the ticket/book/etc. directly. Please note: we need at least two weeks advance notice to do this.
Common uses of the Sublime First fund include, but are not limited to:
- Attending an opera, a ballet, a concert, or other artistic performance for the first time;
- Attending an exhibit, a lecture, or event related to an artist, author, philosopher, scientist, or general concept first encountered of explored in a Core class;
- Additional reading material or online resources to enhance a Core class;
- Travel, lodging, or meal expenses (max. $100 total) for an experience related to a Core class.
Requests must be academically related:
- Requests must be related to a CAS Core class
Funds may not be requested/used for:
- Living costs associated with internships
- Graduate/Professional school visits or interviews
- Semester long travel
- Direct contributions to fundraisers/charities
- Participation in study abroad programs for credit
- Course materials such as books and supplies
- Events/research/travel over summer
- Personal costs (i.e. living expenses)
Notes for travel requests:
- BU does not encourage using personal vehicles for any student activity. If you do use a personal vehicle in such an instance, the vehicle owner’s insurance must provide coverage in the event of an accident.
- The primary driver must be 21 or older
Each request is evaluated by the Core office on Mondays on a rolling basis. Please be sure to allow ample time between your funding request submission and the date on which you will need the funding. Funding requests submitted too close to the date of an event, conference, etc., are not guaranteed to be reviewed.
If your request is approved, Core will require the submission of a written description of:
1) How the funds were used 2) The benefits derived by use of the funds, as well as photos, when applicable. (Submission is required within three weeks of the event)
This application process is for undergraduate Core students only.
