CISE Roundtable: Justin Foster
Justin M. Foster, senior energy trader and principle at Appian Way Energy Partners, was the CISE roundtable guest on Wednesday, March 23, 2016. Foster discussed his career in the energy trading industry since completing his PhD at Boston University and said that he “uses all the knowledge he learned from BU and applies it” in his current work.
While at BU, Foster earned his PhD in 系统工程. His faculty advisor, Michael Caramanis, said that Foster “made himself noticed,” and as a result of his research, he “had multiple offers from US Berkeley, ICF Consulting, FERC, and PJM,” among others upon graduation.
Foster worked as a Senior Energy Trader at Edison Mission Marketing and Trading in 2014. From here, he and four colleagues founded Appian Way, a boutique energy trading firm. Their new firm is located in Cambridge, MA, and focuses on trading in wholesale competitive electricity markets throughout the USA.
This trade business is fast-paced, aggressive, exciting and directly applicable from his training at BU as it involves real-world problem solving.
“I like to be around people so the trade path seemed right. There are real-world problem solving analytics so there is ample opportunity for in-house software development,” said Foster.
