A Legacy of Learning
A fund in honor of Daniel J. Rabone provides opportunities for young theatre artists
Through the height of the summer, high school artists dive in to theater experimentation and intensive masterclasses at the Boston University Summer Theatre Institute (BUSTI), testing the waters of the study of theater at CFA. Culminating in the creation of an original piece of theater with their peers, these aspiring artists write, direct, perform, sing, and engage with Boston’s professional theater community.
Beginning in 2017, two students have had the opportunity to join the program thanks to the Daniel J. Rabone Memorial Fund scholarship, founded in honor of alum Daniel J. Rabone (’91).

Educator, creative director, and actor Rabone, who died in June 2015, was active in Boston-area community theater and a dedicated mentor to young theater artists. “Daniel listened to people with intention and was always able to help them with whatever they were struggling to figure out or trying to achieve,” says Rabone’s husband Richard P. Trevino (SPH’06), director of finance at BU’s National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories (NEIDL).
Trevino embarked on establishing the fund in 2015 to give young adults “an experience that translates across all disciplines and shows how determination and dedication will provide an incredibly enriched self-confidence and awareness in life.” BUSTI aligns with that intention, offering high school theater artists college credit for their work in acting, design, voice, singing, and stage combat, and the opportunity to attend workshops, laboratories, and masterclasses.
Live with passion, share the stage, and work with intention. Rabone lived his life and practiced his art along these central principles. With those driving forces behind him, Trevino’s ultimate goal is to endow the fund in perpetuity, with support from the CFA and wider Boston theater communities.
