Boston University College of Fine Arts School of Theatre presented Sunday in the Park with George from April 25 to 28 in BU’s Joan & Edgar Booth Theatre. Inspired by the painting A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte by Georges Seurat, Sunday in the Park with George, Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s stunning masterpiece, merges past and present into beautiful, poignant truths about life, love, and the creation of art.
One of the most acclaimed musicals of all time, this moving study of the enigmatic painter, Georges Seurat, won a Pulitzer Prize and was nominated for 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The BU School of Theatre production of Sunday in the Park with George is directed by Clay Hopper (CFA’05), Senior Lecturer, Directing, and Katya Stanislavskaya is the show’s music director.
“Sunday in the Park with George is Sondheim’s masterpiece about the act of artistic creation — and what happens when the element of our common humanity is absent from it. The score is exquisite, the script is often hilarious, and among its many themes, artfully interwoven, is one of radical reassertion of our humanity as the center of art’s reason for being,” says Clay Hopper. “In an atomized world, where our connections to each other can be so mediated that we lose sight of why we’re connecting in the first place, this play is a bright sunbeam, a ray hope of hope that our capacity to perceive beauty in all things — and to make that beauty — is our strongest connection of all.”
