Biography
The Dean is the chief academic, administrative, and financial officer of the College and Graduate School. The main responsibilities of the Dean are to lead the College by setting priorities, directing academic planning, and working with departments to help them fulfill their academic missions. The Dean is also the chief advocate for the College in its relationships with the central administration and in representing the College to external constituencies.
About Dean Sclaroff
Stan Sclaroff joined the CAS faculty in 1995. He is a past chair of the Department of Computer Science (2007-2013), associate dean of the faculty for mathematical & computational sciences (2015-2018), founder of CAS’s Image and Video Computing Group, and holds an affiliate appointment in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering in the College of Engineering.
A globally respected scholar in the areas of computer vision, pattern recognition, and machine learning, Stan developed one of the internet’s first content-based image retrieval systems, among a host of field-defining innovations. He has published extensively in dozens of premier scholarly journals and is an elected fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the International Association for Pattern Recognition. He received his B.S. from Tufts University with majors in Computer Science and English, and he received his S.M. and Ph.D. from MIT.
