Itching to make up for lost travel time during the pandemic?
Boston University will hold its annual Study Abroad Expo today, September 14, from 10 am to 2 pm on Marsh Plaza. This drop-in event is open to all students of any year and has info on every program BU Study Abroad offers. Hear from Boston-based staff members as well as visitors from global sites like London, Paris, Venice, and Padua. Students can also chat with study abroad ambassadors (students have who recently studied abroad and can answer questions) and representatives from student services departments like Advising and the Center for Career Development. There will also be free swag.
Study Abroad has 79 programs in 20 countries taught in both local languages and in English. These programs have several different formats and can be major-focused or general classes, even internships. The expo will include information about new programs in Berlin, Germany; Cape Town, South Africa; and Santiago, Chile. Study Abroad will also relaunch existing programs in sites like Quito, Ecuador; Auckland, New Zealand; and Grenoble, France.
Looking to stay closer to home? Check out programs across the United States in cities like Los Angeles, Washington, DC, and a SEA (Sea Education Association) semester at Woods Hole, Mass. Students can also explore external study abroad opportunities if they do not find a program in their desired location.
“Everyone’s reasons for studying abroad are different, and every reason is valid. There’s no wrong reason to study abroad,” says Ilse Damkoehler, BU Study Abroad university relations and campus outreach manager.
According to Damkoehler, it’s never too early to start planning your study abroad program. She encourages everyone, from freshmen to seniors, to attend the expo. Students can plan programs a couple of years out, or even apply for programs this spring.
“What other opportunity are you going to have to spend up to three months studying, learning, and immersing yourself in another country, while also getting credits towards your major?” Damkoehler asks. “The world is so global now. Everyone is connected.”
The deadline to apply for spring study abroad programs is Saturday, October 1, and the deadline for summer programs is March 1, 2023. The application can be found here.
Can’t make it to the expo? Check out the BU Study Abroad calendar for weekly information sessions and other opportunities to chat with staff members about specific programs. The Study Abroad Expo is Wednesday, September 14, from 10 am to 2 pm, on Marsh Plaza.
