Eat, shop, go
We’re entering the final stretch of the semester. It’s been difficult without a spring break, but we’ve thought of a few fun things to take advantage of the warmer weather this Easter holiday weekend. Enjoy a great meal outside at an Allston spot, stay in the spirit of recently released superhero films by checking out a cool comic book shop in Brookline, support your fellow Terriers in a big weekend for BU Athletics, and more.
Tavern in the Square
A favorite among BU students, Tavern in the Square now has outdoor dining. While there won’t be the traditional Thursday night packed house, you can still enjoy the atmosphere and some delicious dishes from the extensive menu, which ranges from items like smoked wings with your choice of honey sriracha, buffalo, or bang bang sauce to a vegetarian quinoa bowl to sirloin steak tips with tamari marinade, garlic mashed potatoes, and roasted green beans.
Tavern in the Square, 161 Brighton Ave., Allston, is open from 4 pm to midnight, Monday through Wednesday; 4 pm to 1 am, Thursday and Friday; 11:30 to 1 am, Saturday; and 11:30 to midnight Sunday.
New England Comics
If you liked Zack Snyder’s cut of the Justice League or the recently released The Falcon and the Winter Soldier on Disney+, you may like what you’ll find at New England Comics in Allston. This shop offers all the Marvel, DC, and manga comics you could ask for, as well as action figures and other fun merchandise like T-shirts and trading cards.
New England Comics, 316 Harvard St., Allston, is open from 11 am to 7 pm, Wednesday; 12 to 6 pm, Thursday and Friday; and 11 am to 6 pm Sunday.
Holy Week Services
Christians are celebrating Easter this weekend, and Marsh Chapel will offer Holy Week services on Thursday, Friday, and Easter Sunday. Marsh Chapel Dean Robert Allan Hill and chaplains and ministry associates will lead virtual services for Maundy Thursday (also known as Holy Thursday), April 1, and Good Friday, April 2, at 6 pm. On Easter Sunday, Dean Hill and Jessica Chicka, University chaplain for international students, will lead an Easter sunrise prayer service on Marsh Plaza at 7:30 am, with a virtual Eucharist celebration at 11 am.
Find more info on how to virtually watch the Holy Week services here. Participants in the Easter morning prayer session will need to maintain a distance of six feet and wear a mask. Listen to a live recording of the Eucharist celebration on WBUR 90.9 FM or online at wbur.org. Read more about BU’s religious services during COVID here.
Free Ink Painting with the BU Arts Initiative and BUild Lab
Join the Arts Initiative in the BUildLab/Innovate@BU space for its April First Friday: Ink Painting Live event. Create marble paintings, listen to music, and take cookies home with you. This free event is open to all BU undergraduate and graduate students. You must be able to show your green COVID attestation badge to attend the event. COVID safety protocols and social distancing will be observed.
The April First Friday: Ink Painting Live event is Friday, April 2, at the BUild Lab, 730 Commonwealth Ave., at 4 pm. Register here.
The Redstone (Virtual) Film Festival 2021
The annual Redstone Film Festival celebrates the best work from undergraduate and graduate students in the College of Communication’s film and television department. This year, it’s possible to stream all trailers and student films leading up to Friday night’s big award ceremony, where prizes for best film, best cinematography, and more will be handed out.
The Redstones have been an important first step for many BU directors, screenwriters, and producers now working in the industry, among them Nora Grossman (COM’05), coproducer of The Imitation Game, and Josh Safdie (COM’07) and Benny Safdie (COM’08), whose latest film, Uncut Gems, was selected as one of 2020’s top 10 films by the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures.
Trailers and screeners can be found here; use the same link to watch the virtual awards ceremony on Friday, April 2, at 7 pm.
Busy Weekend for Terrier Athletics
Although we can’t attend games in person, it’s great to have BU’s sports teams back on the field. This will be a busy weekend for the Terriers with the softball, men’s and women’s lacrosse, and women’s soccer teams all in action. On Saturday, men’s lacrosse faces off against Utah at 11 am, the softball team plays Colgate at 2 pm, and the women’s soccer team is up against Holy Cross at 3 pm. On Sunday, women’s lacrosse takes on Lafayette at noon, while the softball team plays Colgate again, at 2 pm.
Stream every match on ESPN+. The men’s lacrosse team’s match against Utah will also air on the Terrier Sports Radio Network.
