Archaeology Society hosted a Pottery Night
On October 4th, the Archaeology Society hosted their annual Pottery Night event, which included a presentation given by Prof. Andrea Berlin on ceramics. During the presentation, Prof. Berlin covered a variety of topics about ceramics, including how pottery is used in archaeology, the techniques used to analyze pottery, and what pottery can tell us about people and civilizations. Prof. Berlin presented activities to participating members on analyzing ceramics to try and figure out what they showed about the people who used them. She also explained what the Levantine Ceramics Project is and how people can use it to aid their research and curiosity.
After Prof. Berlin’s wonderful presentation and activities, members were able to try and make their own ceramic creations. Everyone was given about a pound of clay, water, and toothpicks. Many different creations were made through many different methods including but not limited to pinch pots, coiling, and slab techniques. In all, the Archaeology Society was able to host about 40 people who all were able to make 1-2 different creations with the clay and materials provided.
Thank you to Cat Metcalf and Archaeology Society for organizing the event and the photos!
