Why do I have an outstanding balance on my Student Account?
There are a few possible reasons for why you may see a balance on your account:
- Medical Insurance: The full cost of the BU Student Health Insurance is applied to your student account in the Fall semester. Once you’ve registered, GRS will apply a credit for half the amount, leaving a remaining balance of approximately $1,200 to rollover to the Spring semester. This balance will not cause any issues for you. After you’ve registered for the Spring semester, GRS will apply the second half of the insurance credit to your bill. Please note, to qualify for full coverage of the annual Basic insurance plan, or both insurance credits, you must earn at least $5,000 per semester for the academic year.
- Registration Adjustments: Tuition scholarships are manually updated at the end of the add/drop period (October 7 & March 1). If you make adjustments to your schedule that changes your total credit hours between your initial semester billing statement and the add/drop period, you may see a charge on your account for the new credit amount. GRS will automatically update your tuition scholarship to cover your new credit total on Oct. 7th and March 1st. if you need the scholarship to be adjusted sooner, please email grsaid@bu.edu to notify them of the change to your registration.
- Registered for an Undergraduate Course: Undergraduate courses (anything coded CAS 100-500) are not automatically covered by GRS. You need to complete a Petition for Financial Aid Coverage form to request to have the tuition charges associated with these courses waived.
- Sports Pass: All students are automatically charged for $150 Sports Pass. You can decline this pass and remove the charge online via your StudentLink before the start of each academic year.
