Advanced Placement Units

College of Engineering Undergraduate Policy

Advanced Placement Examinations

College of Engineering students may receive Advanced Placement (AP) units by earning a qualifying score on the appropriate AP examination administered by the College Board. Official College Entrance Examination Board (CEEB) score reports must be submitted to the Admissions office at Boston University to earn AP units.

International Baccalaureate Examinations

Students in the College of Engineering may receive International Baccalaureate (IB) units by attaining a qualifying score on the appropriate IB subject-matter examination. Course units for IB exams and other international advanced unit exams is determined by the Admissions office, 881 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA 02215.

AP/IB units will award, at most, one Hub requirement, even when the equivalent course at BU carries more than one unit. Complete details are available from Admissions’ Advanced Units Guide and the University policy on BU Residency Requirement and Transfer of Undergraduate Units.

Note that if a student chooses to enroll in the same or equivalent course for which units have been awarded by a qualifying score on an AP or IB exam, duplicate units cannot be applied to the degree. A Boston University course takes precedence over AP and IB units.
