Nondegree Students

College of Engineering Graduate Policy

Any qualified student interested in undertaking graduate-level coursework as a nondegree student may register on a space-available basis, after matriculated students have registered, with approval from the Engineering Graduate Programs office. Only three courses (maximum of 12 unit hours) taken at Boston University as a nondegree student may be applied to a graduate degree. Interested applicants must complete an Application for Admission as a nondegree student and obtain approval.

Accepted nondegree international students who are requesting Boston University immigration sponsorship will work with the Engineering Graduate Programs office to gather the additional documentation necessary to obtain an immigration document from the International Students & Scholars Office (ISSO). To maintain their immigration status, international students must register for and complete a minimum of 12 unit hours each fall or spring term.

International students who are already in the US in a non-immigrant status that permits part-time study may enroll following US immigration regulations that govern their status. For questions regarding studies in relation to immigration status, please contact the ISSO at ISSOGAC@bu.edu.

All international students must check in with the ISSO at 888 Commonwealth Avenue, 2nd Floor, Boston, MA 02215 at the beginning of their classes.

Further information for international students can be found on the ISSO website.

Registration of nondegree students takes place during the on-campus registration period, just before the fall and spring terms begin. Specific information may be obtained a few weeks before the registration period by calling or writing to the College of Engineering Graduate Programs office, 44 Cummington Mall, Boston, MA 02215; phone: 617-353-9760 or email: enggrad@bu.edu.
