Teaching Licensure

Students preparing to teach in public schools should refer to the College of Arts & Sciences Education section and to information about securing teaching licenses on the School of Education website. In addition to the requirements of a College of Arts & Sciences major, teacher candidates must meet specific requirements to be able to receive endorsement by the Licensure Office in the Boston University School of Education for licensure by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

To be considered for admission to the student teaching practicum as a part of the teacher licensure sequence, students seeking licensure in secondary education areas (e.g., mathematics, science, history) must achieve a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 in six semester courses in their major discipline. Students in all other licensure programs must have a GPA of 2.5 in professional class sequences required to reach that level.

Application should be made no later than the beginning of the second semester of the sophomore year.
