Physical Education Classes

Registration for physical education classes is the same as for academic courses. Physical education classes are listed in the class schedule under Physical Development Program (PDP). Participants can earn ½, 1, or 2 credits.  For course offerings, see Courses.

FitRec Membership

Membership provides BU students, faculty, staff, and alumni access to world-class recreation facilities in a convenient location on campus. Full-time enrolled BU undergraduate and graduate students have full access to the facility. Depending on affiliation, faculty, staff, alumni, and part-time students are able to purchase memberships at highly competitive rates.

Noncredit Instructional Program

The FitRec Noncredit Instructional Program offers a variety of low-cost, noncredit classes to students, faculty, staff, alumni, and their families during the fall, spring, and summer semesters. (See Family Recreation Programs for children’s classes.) The program is also open to the general public. We offer classes in aquatics, climbing, court sports, dance, emergency medical services, fitness, mind-body, rowing, sailing, and sports. Course lengths range from one to 12 weeks. Family Recreation Program

Family Recreation classes are offered in swimming, climbing, dance, individual and team sports, tumbling, gymnastics, and other activities at various times during the year. In addition, School Vacation Programs offer day-long activities during February and April school vacations. During the summer, the Terrier Sports & Recreation Camp provides day camps for children—the Summer School  Vacation Camp (grades K–4) and the Swimsport Camp (grades 4–8). Club Sports

Club sports are initiated and administered by students with the guidance of the Physical Education, Recreation & Dance staff. Some club sport teams practice several times a week and engage in intercollegiate competition. Others provide instruction and/or workouts. Minor in Dance

The minor consists of 20 credits in dance theory, studio, and performance classes. Required dance theory classes are CFA TH 139, CFA TH 239, and CFA TH 434. Students must also take four semesters of PDP DA 400 or CFA TH 601. The remaining credits must be technique classes, with a minimum of one semester in at least four of the following areas: ballet, modern, jazz, tap, or movement improvisation. This minor is now available to all undergraduate students.

Intramural Sports

Intramural sports provide team competition for groups of students, faculty, and staff. Teams are scheduled into leagues with a four- or five-game regular season and the possibility of playoffs. Each team plays approximately one game a week in the evening or on the weekend. Men’s, women’s, and co-rec leagues are available in most sports, and teams choose their ability division based on the experience level of team members. Intramural sports offered are soccer (outdoor and indoor), volleyball, flag football, ice hockey, dodgeball, three-on-three basketball, five-on-five basketball, ice broomball, Wiffle™ ball, softball, floor hockey, kickball, and a swim meet.
