Student Activities
Undergraduate Associations
Undergraduate associations in many CAS departments provide undergraduate majors and minors with the opportunity to discuss common interests, problems, and perspectives, and to meet with professors at coffee hours, open houses, and other social events. The associations provide academic assistance and graduate school and career planning information as well as classroom films, speakers, and multimedia programs. Among the most active groups in recent years have been the undergraduate associations in classics (UCA), earth sciences, economics (UEA), English (BULG), political science (UPSA), history and international relations (UHIRA), geography, chemistry-biology (Chemia), mathematics, modern languages (UMLA), psychology (UPA), physics (Photon), and philosophy (UPHA). Consult departmental sections for further information.
Student Representation on Faculty Committees
CAS students have representation on many standing committees of the College of Arts & Sciences. These committees include the CAS Academic Conduct Committee and the Academic Policy and Curriculum Committees. Interested students should contact Associate Dean Susan Jackson in CAS Room 106.
CAS Dean’s Hosts
Students chosen to serve as CAS Dean’s Hosts help to coordinate recruitment and community-building efforts on behalf of the College of Arts & Sciences. During April Open Houses, Dean’s Hosts provide prospective students and guests with an inside view of academic programs and undergraduate life at Boston University. To be eligible, a student must be in good academic and disciplinary standing.
CAS Student Government
The College of Arts & Sciences Student Government is the College’s student governing body and is responsible, in consultation with its advisor, for allocation of the CAS student activities budget. Student Government-sponsored events and funded activities have included debates on current affairs, films, SpringFest, Homecoming, Freedom Music, Brownstone Journal, Bruins and Celtics games, a formal and senior reception, and AIDS Awareness Week. CAS Student Government provides leadership and funding to programs in the College through its all-student committees.
CAS Peer Mentors
The CAS Peer Mentor program, coordinated by the College of Arts & Sciences Programs & Leadership Office, facilitates the transition of first-year students into college life. Peer mentors introduce new students to campus resources, provide information on academic policies, encourage participation in co-curricular events and competency-building workshops, and create support networks with other freshmen.
